IT’S MORE THAN JUST INK ON PAPER.

IT’S COLLABORATION, COMMITMENT, AND CREATION. SPECTOR & CO. IS A PROUD SUPPORTER OF OUR ARTISTIC CULTURE.

In the beginning of 2019, we invited three local animation students, Abdal, Matty, and Ioannis to work on a collaborative project under the name…

THE CREATIVE MINDS

Abdal Adbaddayam

My name is Abdal, I’m a student at Dawson College for 3D animation. I’m an aspiring concept artist and a have a huge passion for hand-drawn animation and hand-drawn aesthetic in modern films and video games. I “draw” a lot of inspiration from the indie market and one of my dreams is to work on my very own independent short film. As for artistic influence, Rebecca Sugar and Adam Muto are artists I’ve been following for a while.

As for my workflow, I’m pretty open for exploring new software. I might work mostly in Photoshop and Maya but I also enjoy experimenting with Substance painter, premier and ZBrush, any method to produce art. The feeling I’m trying to achieve when people observe my art is not really specific, I try to capture what I’m feeling at the time and share it with observer. These emotions can range from joy to melancholy.

Matty Gavarrette-Wilson

I am a proud Costa Rican kid who is passionate about the arts. I became seriously interested in character design when I was around 10 years old. At that time, I was putting more effort into my drawings and started to appreciate the intricacy and playfulness that goes into creating characters.

Fantasy has to be one of the main themes found in my works. I love to explore the fantastical and create interesting characters in those settings. I like to use a semi-realistic cartoony style that can paint the images of people around the world. I’d like my viewers to connect to my art through relatability. The expressions and the fluidity of movement in my works. Disney movies, mythology, anime, my life experiences, my family, my friends, and my teachers.

I stopped forcing my work to take a style that didn’t suit me. I just had an idea and let my pencil do the rest. I’m proud of the digital painting that I made for my grandfather’s birthday that also doubled as a final assignment for my first year in the 3D program. When I was younger, the big dream was Disney, but now I’m more interested in Dreamworks, Wonderstorm, and Mercury films. My career goal is to make my own short film that impacts people of all ages and hopefully shift their paradigm of the world. Something that helps people learn about how change can be a good thing and how diversity should be celebrated.

Ioannis Lazaras

I’ve been drawing and designing characters pretty much my whole life. I was way into super heroes as a kid and spent most of my time coming up with my own. I never really stopped designing characters, but since then I’ve moved from superheroes to mostly regular people (I also grew up during the dark age of comics, and it’s influenced my art and designs). I love drawing different kinds of people, and I love the idea that their values and the sum of their life experiences shape how they are and, through that, how they look. There’s a lot of subtlety and nuance in how that turns out, and I like to play with that while exaggerating features and character traits through their appearance. What a lot of people notice about my work is my style. I draw heavy inspiration from the dynamism and cartoon-injected-with-realism style of artists like Jamie Hewlett, Mike Mignola, Andrew Ross Maclean, Mark Laszlo, and Daniel Warren Johnson (among others). I’ve always loved character design and drawing concepts of people and props, and my biggest goal is to become a concept artist for video games, especially with WB Montreal and Ubisoft so close by. That said, the 3D Animation program at Dawson has introduced me to the many facets of the animation pipeline including lighting and modeling, which I find as interesting to play with as concept art. I aim to keep practicing my craft, while always broadening my artistic horizons.
